LOCATIONS: Northstar Tutoring runs tutoring programs in Hyattsville and Columbia Heights as well at DC area schools like Garrison Elementary.
All of our locations are metro accessible. Hyattsville sessions take place at Nicholas Orem Middle School, and Columbia Heights sessions take place at the Mt. Pleasant Library.
TUTORING: Each Northstar student is matched with a volunteer tutor-mentor who works with the student for the full academic year, and often for several subsequent years. When a student starts the program, Northstar speaks with the student, parents and teachers to pinpoint areas of academic strengths and weakness to help address their particular needs.
Tutoring sessions take place in Columbia Heights every Tuesday and Wednesday and in Hyattsville every Tuesday and Thursday. During the 90 minute sessions, students work with their volunteers to complete their homework and study for upcoming tests and quizzes. Students are also provided with extra educational materials based on their individual math and reading needs for days when they do not have homework
MENTORING: After the student/tutor pairs have worked together for 6 weeks, they being to participate in mentoring activities. These outings are planned by the volunteer and the student/parent and can range from going to the movies or visiting a museum, to attending sporting events or meeting for extra tutoring sessions. These mentoring activities help to solidify the tutor/student relationship which in turn improves the effectiveness of tutoring sessions.
SUMMER: Our Hyattsville tutoring program continues throughout the summer, offering students the opportunity to keep up academic progress and study with their tutor over the summer holidays.
