Changing Futures for Washington, DC Students
Northstar provides free, one‑on‑one tutoring and mentoring for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Our focus is on academic growth, confidence building, and long‑term relationships. We work in close collaboration with schools and families reinforce classroom learning and meet each student’s individual needs.
At Northstar, each student is matched with a small team of 2–3 volunteer tutors who work with them one‑on‑one throughout the school year. Most students attend two to three sessions each week, with the same tutors assigned consistently to build strong relationships and provide personalized support.
Sessions typically last 60 to 90 minutes and take place at community centers, libraries, or schools in a structured, supervised environment. Each session begins with a check-in, followed by targeted academic support — whether it’s helping with homework, reviewing class material, or building foundational skills in reading and math. Tutors tailor each session based on the individual student’s needs, using a mix of school assignments, skill-building resources, and supplemental materials. This consistent, individualized approach helps students make meaningful progress over time, both academically and personally.
Mentoring at Northstar is built into every tutoring relationship. Because students meet consistently with the same 2–3 tutors each week, there’s time and space for real connections to grow. Tutors aren’t just academic supports — they serve as steady, trusted adults who listen, encourage, and show up week after week. In addition to the informal mentoring that happens during sessions, tutors are encouraged to take their student on a monthly mentoring outing outside of tutoring time. These outings — like visiting a museum, playing basketball, or grabbing ice cream — give students the chance to explore new experiences, practice social skills, and deepen their bond with their tutor. Over time, this mentoring component becomes just as impactful as the academic support, helping students build confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging.
